It’s Better to Drive an Old Car than Be Burdened By New Debt
Is a new car or old better? Should you upgrade your phone every year? I once asked an economics professor what financial lesson he would share with the whole world if he could. His answer surprised me.

Millions of children are growing up without the love of a family. In many developing countries, these children are raised in institutions-commonly referred to as orphanages. Unfortunately, decades-old research has shown that institutional care actually has devastating long-term effects on children. The Becoming Minimalist Community is working to change that. I've been slowly getting rid of most of my useless junk. I feel much happier now, it's still an ongoing project. Try this thought experiment: if your crap was completely destroyed, stolen or lost what you really miss or get upset about?

My "opportunity costs" these days have more to do with my time than my $$...as I get older. I'd almost always want to spend my time on something other than shopping for new things.

I was two payments away from owning my car when some young people decided it would be fun to steal it & go for a joy ride. It was recovered but had total damage so we were forced to buy another car. We bought a pre owned but have payments all over again & it wasn't our fault. Our stolen car was going to need some repair but was still in warranty & some non warranted items like tires were going to have to be paid for but would have been easily covered by having no car payment. Sometimes plans just don't work out.

I have absolutely been pondering a new car. But I realized it was just the feeling or coolness, not the need. I will continue to stay car payment free until it’s an actual need and my car conks out on me. I would rather save and work towards debt freedom.

My Jeep Wrangler lasted 20! I only retired it because I live in the snow belt and the rust got it…. It was working perfectly fine but could not pass inspection due to frame issues. A guy into building cars bought it and replaced the frame - a project with his son so he could learn about working on cars. 210K miles. Yes I bought another Jeep Wrangler

My husband bought a "new" truck for $6,700. It was a 2003 Chevy Silverado 2500. He bought it last year. My 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe is becoming more expensive to maintain, so I'm shopping for a secondhand Mitsubishi. I like the one they're phasing out. My phone is a 2023 model. My home is paid off. We have enough free cash to buy land in western PA. We're setting up a fruit farm on 5 acres. You'd be amazed at how many trees you can fit on that land. We bought 15 more acres to hunt on.

Take the complete COST, not just the price, of that car (or anything for that matter) and divide it by the hours/weeks/months/years you’ll be working to pay for it. Then make your decision. When I convert the money into time and effort I can more clearly see how much LIFE a I’ll spend for that item. Hope that helps you with your purchasing decisions. God bless.

Well, regarding the car, I think it depends on who you are. Driving an old car can be stressful and expensive too. You never know what will break next time and how much that will cost, and yiu never know when it will break down and spoil your plans. Here in Denmark, the authorized mechanics charge ~100 $ per hour, and the parts are pricey too. The Danish car owners association made a calculation some years ago. The conclusion was that the cheapest way to own a car for the average owner was to buy a new car and keep it for 6 years... and that is despite that cars in Denmark are heavily taxed (buy one, pay for 2)... and then you'll have a reliable car with very few repairs for 6 years If you can do some of the maintenance yourself and know the signs of something that needs to be fixed soon, the old car is a good idea, but otherwise, probably not. But what I found to be MUCH cheaper is to simply not have a car. I have a good e-bike, and then I use a shared car whenever I really need a car ☺️

I feel like the richest woman in the world because I have the best neighbors who care about me. I also have friends at church with precious little children who make it a great day every week. My husband and I were lucky enough to pay off the house where I live still. We did have to purchase a newer car for my husband to keep his job; they did provide a reimbursement for a couple of years until his job changed and we lost that income. However, the vehicle did last for 300,000 miles before it died and had to be replaced. I know how it feels to own a home free and clear along with my vehicle.

I bought a two year old Mercedes 14 years ago. I drive about 300 miles a month. I have a trustworthy mechanic that takes care of my car. My children think I should get a new car! I mean they strongly suggest that I get a new car! It has about 108,000 miles on it and I do the oil changes, filters, new tires and batteries when needed. I haven’t had a car payment in over a dozen years! I really like my car and the low cost to have it!

New cars are almost always a bad idea. I have developed a habit of buying my cars about three years old. Things have change a bit since Covid. Pre Covid a three year old cost fifty cents on the dollar. People dont learn how money works in school, therefore most are manipulated by creative marketers and credit card companies who prey on society’s financial ignorance.

Joshua, you will always be my hero and mentor. I watched this video last night, and this morning I began sweeping and mopping my floors. I also cleaned my bathroom with the exception of the tub which I will do later. Ever since I moved away from home in 1985 I've had a housekeeper. I hate to clean, and that comes from being rebellious as a teenager. A few months ago I was approached by one of the ladies at church to either vacuum the church or clean the bathrooms. I'm not a member, and I really didn't feel obliged, but I accepted the job of bathrooms. I enjoy it! I stuck with it and a few weeks ago got a key to the church so I can go in whenever I want. I'm 72 now with arthritic hands and a stiff knee, however doing this has expanded to my own home. I'm saving $65/month by cleaning myself. And this past month I was able to save $800 from my Social Security. Yay for me!

My husband drives a 2004 Toyota Highlander with 185,000 miles and I drive a 2008 Toyota Corolla with 207,000 miles on it. We love our old cars and I dread the day I have to replace them, but when I do it will be paid for in cash as we've been saving since we don't have any debt. We've never asked the bank how much how we could afford. We raised three boys in our cozy 682 sq ft house that cost us $52,000 in 2007.

Brilliant video as always, though I've blurred the lines here, having bought a car I wanted when released 14 years ago for sensible money, though I'm now spending a third of the value of the car on the timing belt and a few other bits to enaure its longevity. It has still been a big decision with some definite stress (used cars sales places always feel sketchy) though ultimately even with the work I've ended up with a car costing about 20% of the equivalent new price which puts a smile on my face on the commute, plus the look on my son's face when the roof folds away is priceless. In short, if there's a car you'd like (and there's no doubt several for most of us), patience pays off.
